The hardest to find piece, although, not necessarily the most • expensive,

Er, isn't that just a lt. grey 1x1 cylinder?  Is there something special • about
it?

Yes, there is something unusual about it. The directions show the
cylinder without a hole in the top stud.  Those older style cylinders • were
in a few sets in the 70s, but have proved very hard for myself and others • to
find.

Aha.  I was looking at the picture of 6077, the US release, on LUGNET - and
it appears to have the 'holy' cylinder.  It looks like only the European • set
(677) had the cylinder with the solid top. So that would explain your
problems...

After a quick check - all my grey cylinders seem to be holy, but I do have • a
couple of yellow ones with the solid tops.

I have offered this explanation before, that 6077 contains a different
cylinder than 677, but I am not really sure about that.  I know the boxes
for 6077 show the older type (unholy) cylinder.  Additionally, the
instructions for 6077 and 677 are one and the same.  But seeing how hard
this piece is to find, I don't really believe the contents match the
box/instruction pictures.
I did buy an old parts pack containing 44 of the older type grey
cylinders (the unholy ones), but they were actually an even older (cellulose
acetate, not ABS) type of cylinder.  Those older pieces were not nearly as
well made as the pieces made today.  Oh well, the search continues...
