Any thoughts on carrying feeds of that traffic into their respective LUGNET
newsgroups? I'm not sure why those folks went their own way, but I respect
it. However, in keeping with LUGNET's purpose, there's a lot to say for
centralization of the viewability of, or consciousness of, AFOL activity. I
think it'd be nice to cross-communicate - even if it's just to allow
newcomers to see the outside traffic volume and a synopsis of that group's
purpose/characteristics (assuming the outside groups didn't want posts to
come from LUGNET).

A couple of issues come to mind.

First, some of these LUGNET-expatriate groups allow behavior not in-line with
LUGNET's ToS.  So pulling their traffic into LUGNET would result in LUGNET
hosting posts that might violate ToS.

Yeah, I know the ToS caused some smaller groups to go elsewhere. (it's worth
mentioning that some of 'em -really- miss the LUGNET interface/mechanics.)

For such a case, I was imagining visual indicator of activity - like a meter or
multi-dimensional view of socialization in those other places. Toward a sort-of
"fly-over" view of the community; an all-inclusive view.  ...like seeing Earth
from the moon. Nations aren't divided when you pan back so far.

I'm sure you've all discussed this stuff to death, but, I've been away, so bear
with me for a sec. IMO, if LUGNET wants more newsgroup users, it has to allow
private channels - ones that it's not responsible for. Then, In such a case,
say, LUGNET had a private group for a LUG. The public would see the open ng and
some indication of [property-x] behind the curtain, for a more complete picture.
...I'm sure you're all thinking that I mean numbers of posts next to a name of a
private group, but no. Something more valuable and untimately more true (numbers
aren't everything).

ug. I must be on drugs. sorry. I actually don't have time to write anything
coherent, or spellcheck it, or even read through the rest of this thread... I
nned to finish school finals. (!!!)

Just one more thought on socio-dynamics and such... about "policing"... probably
already discussed... an approach from a different direction...

Recently I was at a site that had, on its homepage, some dorky "family friendly"
or "we're clean" sticker on it. If LUGNET had something similar (less dorky),
and our message-posters saw it all the time, not only would it tell them what's
likely to be in the LUGNET ToS[1], it'd be clear to the whole community that
"this" is part of what makes us us. pride. Made clear from the get-go. It might
do more to keep the place clean than a threat. I magine, anyone who violated
something so obvious about the site would look foolish. Any public argument
about it would also look foolish. (IMHO.) In general, LUGNET has, not a
restriction, but a -choice- of site-type. that's always been the case.

I -have- to get back to my schoolwork now.
bye! (^^)
