Um, it was kind of varied. I started off checking out the high peaks, and
investigating them so I could denote what major event was going on to cause
high posting frequency. It worked great with my first attempt (Brad announcing
Lego Direct), but that 2nd peak around Nov. 2000 turned out to seemingly just be
increased traffic. So did.. uh... some other peak in 2001. Somewhat
unsuprisingly, much seemed due to off-topic.debate threads, happening to
coincide with larger traffic periods.
So after checking a few with only 1 really useful result, I started going the
other way round-- picking major events that I could remember, and finding them
on the chart.
If youd like to find out, its a rather arduous process. As it turns out I
happened to have all of admin.statistics posts saved-- so it was a bit easier
for me. I parsed out the hits for lugnet.*, and slapped em into excel, which
shows very clearly which days have high peaks. You can find this out yourself by
hunting through .statistics posts (or, I suppose I can post the flat text data
if people are interested?) and finding a date youre interested in.
Then, check out the statistics file-- itll show you which newsgroups had high
levels of traffic that day/week. Finally, do a search on Lugnet within that
group (or cycle back within the group view) for posts in that time period, and
see what theyre all talking about. A painful process if youre trying to check
more than a couple peaks-- which is why I didnt really investigate further.

| (...) (snip) (...) Dave... great job on the chart. I just wondering...about the 'major high peaks' on the chart. In other words what topics/posts made or cause the high peaks? If there is a general way to know. -Abner (20 years ago, 19-Apr-05, to lugnet.admin.general, FTX)
