Matt, I have built a lego robot controlled by a PC, using an IR link to communicate commands. It used the same IR technology as Mindstorms, but had an omni-directional IR link on the robot. Excellent idea! I'd suspect that the relationship would be sinusoidal rather than linear, but who knows? If it is, it's a sine/cosine generator, too. Sone LEDs (laser diodes, don't know about others) are polarized in some specific plane. It is (...) (25 years ago, 21-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics)

go to start->settings->control panel->ports and see if COM1 is available, if not then use the the com port that is listed there, if there is nothing there then there is something wrong. did you try the Windows Serial Debug instructions, at (URL) will at least tell you if the serial port is working at all. if you don't see the "Direct to COM1" setting available in HyperTerminal, then Windows doesn't believe you have a serial port at (...) Our first RCX has a sensor port failure on port 3 (Aaaarghhh...). The sensor port will read 0 and 1 only. I actually like the 1*1*6, 1*2*6 and 1*3*6 bricks to use as walls. I like Burps and the castle walls. I like hollow baseplates. If I remember correctly, you can download spirit.ocx from the mindstorms internet site. I'm not sure if the 1.5 software installs it to HD, the 1.0 did. Are you referring to the "Robot Wars" show the BBC aired about a year ago? I hardly think Lego robots are up to challenges like that. They even used flamethrowers. Dave, I agree with you--Lego should make the byte codes public. I think NQC has sold quite a few RCX's and it's foolish of them not give out this info. It could only help them.
