Yep, that makes sense. On the other hand (and this is really an TPM vs.
ANH, ESB & ROTJ question more than it is a SOTME one): If Vader knew and
recognized the droids, why didn't he just destroy them when he had the
chance? It seems to me that it would've been safer that way.

Safer?  How?  They are just droids, they can,t do anything to him.  It was a
backwater Imperial planet, no need to destroy equipment they can use and
save the Empire a credit or two.  They might have had useful information no
the Rebels too.

R2D2 and C3PO are both very common style droids... C3PO may have been built
by Anakin, but once he gets his coverings on he looks like any other
protocol droid.  R2 is just an astromech unit.  Since they are not "organic"
life forms they have no real "mind" that Vader or any force sensitive being
could read.  Therefore, it's highly unlikely that Vader would recognize them.

Ah,yes, but R2-D2 has his number on him, remember?  Also, Vader and threepio
had had a run-in before then, on alderran I think.  C-3PO was working at a
party, and thought Vader was a new guard droid. :)

If you remember, C3PO *DID* get 'destroyed' in ESB, even though Vader had
very little to do with it.  Besides, even if Vader did recognize them, they
really aren't relevant because the droids are basically harmless.  Anything
the droids might know about Vader's identity is irrelevant... Vader has
nothing to hide, he reveals himself to Luke anyway.

Well, yeah, he just shut them down so they couldn't warn Luke and Leia.

Of course, the real reason behind the interaction (or lack thereof) between
Vader and the droids is that Lucas probably didn't come up with the
"Anakin-building-3PO" thing until a couple of years ago... well after the
original movies were already completed anyway.

Yes, but he did know he was going to put them in the prequls.
