and Star Wars, all set in the present or future.

Sorry - got to be picky here, Star Wars is probably the oldest era of all
Lego sets - it was after all set "Long long ago in a galaxy far far away".

No, it was set in our future, but the story was being told by someone for
whom the events of the Star Wars saga were in the past.  Got it?

No, I don't think that you can draw that conclusion.  There's nothing in the
movie to date it (by our timeline) and while it seems to be a retelling of a
story (at least from the intro scrolls with each movie) it's not a given.

The "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." line is, in fact, meant to
mean that this all happened a long time ago from when we are now, and in a
galaxy far, far away from where we are now.  That was meant to give it a thrust
of mythology.  Lucas pretty much considers the stories to be more based in
swords-and-sorcery (with a healthy dash of Wild West) than in science fiction.

I
know the rumor/urban legend that the set of 9 movies would end with R2-D2
and C-3PO talking to each other about their adventures but there's been no
canonical (sp?) proof of that.  Just MHO.

Lucas did say, at the time that he said there would be three trilogies, that
the only characters that would appear in all 9 movies would be R2-D2 and C-3PO,
and what we'd end up with is a history of a period of great change in the
galaxy, as witnessed by two rather unassuming and seemingly unimportant Droids.
I like this concept for the cycle, but Lucas has changed his mind, it seems.

So far, only four characters have appeared in all 4 movies- the two droids,
Obi-Wan, and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

Since Lucas has apparently decided that there will only be 6 movies, and they
will focus on the rise, fall, and saving of Anakin Skywalker, it seems unlikely
that either Anakin or Obi-Wan won't appear in Episodes II or III.
