An interesting question.
I played with LEGO all through my childhood years. Now, with the resources of
Lugnet, I can actually identify some of the earliest sets I had as a youngster,
and I know that they were released only a couple years after my birth! I was
actually discussing with my parents this weekend, though, that most of the sets
they got me at the time were the BASIC boxes, so I had very few minifigs or
other specialised elements- at the time they only saw the price-per-brick
factor. Ah well.
At any rate, I continued playing with LEGO pretty much straight through till I
was in Jr. High! One of my friends, who was a couple years younger than me,
had an absolutely huge collection- his older brother's main toy as a child was
LEGO, and so was my friend's, and my friend now had ALL of it. So we would
build HUGE towns, and military bases, and so on. Life was good.
I never really reached a point when I disdained LEGO, or when I wouldn't
occasionally mess around with them, but through the end of junior high and
through high school I have to admit that the bricks sat in the attic, never
being unpacked after a move. In about 1993, however, I was in
college and my Comp Sci friends introduced me to these things called
"newsgroups". Eventually, I discovered alt.toys.lego, and my obsession was
rekindled. I wish I could say that some of my friends, or my family, or
someone, anywhere, gave me flak about liking LEGO, so I could claim to have
stood bravely against their disdain, but no one really did. My girlfriend in
college gave me LEGO sets at pretty much every occasion one traded gifts, my
friends themselves actually would occasionally buy small sets for
themselves when we'd be in toy stores together, my parents were only too happy
to get into the attic and pull out my old bricks for me... two years ago (to
the day, now that I think about it) on my 25th birthday, my college friends
presented me with an Insectoids set and proclaimed that I was the easiest
person they knew to buy gifts for (then they took advantage of the fact that I
had been drinking to get me to wear the mask that came with the set, and took
pictures). Just this weekend, my parents proudly gave me all the little Shell
promo sets, along with the pit stop one, and my mother showed me the Belleville
one she bought for herself (!). They also bought me Sphinx Secret Surprise
because we found it was on sale.
Anyway, that's my story. It's not exactly movie of the week material, eh?
