Hello,

I was wondering if any of you had any interesting stories about what
prompted your exit from your Dark Ages. Was there a specific set? Did you
visit someone with a layout? Did you immediatety go on a shopping spree?

I'll get the ball rolling. Personally, I have always been a fan of Town. It
was 1994. My Dark Ages had begun 3 years earlier, when I was 15. My family
and I were on our way back from a short vacation in Toronto (I live in
Montreal, Canada). On the Quebec-Ontario border there is a place called
Cullen Gardens. The people who build an run the place have set up a large
diorama using 6" figures mage of clay. The diorama was set in very large
gardens that supply the "trees". It included a main street, houses, a lake,
trains going around and a lot more that I don't even remember.

I was immediately inspired. As soon as I got home that night, before I
unpacked my bags, I ran to the basement and started clearing space for a
Town layout. The next day, I climbed into the attic and found all my Lego.
It seemed like alot at the time (I have since increased the size of my
collection at least tenfold, but that is another story...;-) ). I started
building right away and the rest is history...

Anyone else want to speak up?

(...) My dark ages were rather short. They began in late 1996 when Town Jr. started to come out. Town sets have lost their touch since the late 80's and early 90's. By 1999 Star Wars had come out, and I started to become a train fan. Not a fanatic, (...) (24 years ago, 24-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)
Re: How did you come out of your Dark Ages?

(...) Well this one is simple for me. My Dark Ages started about 1986/87 and lasted until the Star Wars sets came out. Star Wars is what got me back into LEGO but ever since I have been branching into other themes as well. Eric Kingsley The New (...) (24 years ago, 24-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)

I came out of my dark ages about 4 years ago. I'm 38 now.... I had given my old LEGO (including blue train track and the old SHELL garage) to my twin boys and was shopping around for some Chrsitmas gifts. The Launch Command lowboy tractor with (...) (...) My case is very particular; I have always loved Lego since I was very small. The thing is that I live in Venezuela, and Lego doesnt have offices here, so basically Lego sets are imported goods, and VERY expensive. I am talking about 300% US (...) (24 years ago, 24-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)
Re: How did you come out of your Dark Ages?

My dark ages lasted about 10 years, from age 16 to 26. I was in a Toys R' Us about two years ago, just looking around, and decided to check out the Lego section to see what the sets were looking like these days. A few town sets caught my eye and (...) (24 years ago, 24-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)

(...) Cullen Gardens is _not_ at the border between PQ and Ontario...It's about 5 hrs away from the border! (Trust me-we went from Pickering (about 30 min west of Cullen Gardens) to just west of of Montreal this past summer (at 120K...my dad's truck (...) (24 years ago, 24-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)
Re: How did you come out of your Dark Ages?

My Dark Age started about the time I got my drivers license. It ended 8 years later when I picked up the X-Wing fighter. Thank goodness for the Star Wars sets, otherwise my Dark Age may not have ended. Since picking up the X-Wing I've easily doubled (...) (24 years ago, 24-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)
Re: How did you come out of your Dark Ages?

(...) It was early 1998. I had a nice collection of LEGO models assembled, including Adventueres, Extreme Team, Aquaraiders, and my beautiful <set:4554 Metro Station> I'm not sure what happened. I was eleven, and perhaps I took the box too literally (...) (24 years ago, 24-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)
Re: How did you come out of your Dark Ages?

(...) Well I've never truly been in or out of a dark age that I can pinpoint. In some ways I am currently in a dark age in that about a year and a half ago I left for college and left LEGO with my youngest brother at home. Despite the fact that I (...) (24 years ago, 24-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)

Well, my dark ages began early 80s (81? not sure) The last set I bought was the 8860 car chassis. It ended when I saw a Mindstorms. Just had to have it. My childhood Lego had been left packed up at my step-dad's house, and luckily hadn't been (...) (24 years ago, 25-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)

Re: How did you come out of your Dark Ages?

(...) My exit from my Lego Dark Ages was prompted by fatherhood. My son, Spencer, was born in 1996. I bought him some Duplo when he was two. He enjoyed it well enough, but preferred his Matchbox cars. Last year, my folks instructed me to clear the (...) (24 years ago, 25-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)
Re: How did you come out of your Dark Ages?

I came out of my dark ages because I bought a house that had an extra room I wasn't using. Previous to this, I had a small, 1 bedroom condo. All my childhood LEGO was packaged up at my parents house. At Christmas, I would get out my pre-dark-ages (...) (24 years ago, 26-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)

I came out of my dark ages in late 1995. At the time I was interested in my old Atari computers and was reading the comp.sys.atari.8bit newsgroup. Occasionally, I would glace through other newsgroups and one day saw rec.toys.lego. What intrigued me (...) (24 years ago, 27-Nov-00, to lugnet.people)

Re: How did you come out of your Dark Ages?

First of all, I love it when these threads get started. Some of the stories that surface about people "hiding" something they truly like, work on, and are proud of is touching. David Eaton's in particular was very nice. LEGO was my main toy when I (...) (24 years ago, 5-Dec-00, to lugnet.people)

Hi, er um, my name's Ronan, I'm 38 and I like lego. Now that's out of the way... I've joined up here in the last couple of weeks, thinking that this was the end of my dark age. But maybe I've been deluding myself really. I've been buying lego for (...) (24 years ago, 6-Dec-00, to lugnet.people)

(...) It was Halloween of '97 (19 yrs old) and I was at a grocery store (Superstore) with my significant other looking for the candy aisle. Instead we came across the Lego aisle and I decided to take a peek. Since I'm a castle fan, 6097 Night Lord's (...) (24 years ago, 6-Dec-00, to lugnet.people)
Re: How did you come out of your Dark Ages?

(...) Boy oh boy. That's a big one. My "dark age" really only got going when I was 18 (1989), and I realised that I had to get off to college and be "productive." I was working 80-hour weeks so it was easy to quit, but occasionally I'd still bought (...) (24 years ago, 7-Dec-00, to lugnet.people)
