I came out of my dark ages in late 1995. At the time I was interested
in my old Atari computers and was reading the comp.sys.atari.8bit
newsgroup. Occasionally, I would glace through other newsgroups and one
day saw rec.toys.lego. What intrigued me initially about the newsgroup
were the auction listings. I was getting married in a few months and
need to raise some cash. After looking into it more, I decided to
auction most of my childhood collection. I spent the next couple of
months assembling and checking my old sets and listing them for
auction. I remember my fiance asked me whether I would miss these sets
once they were all sold, but I told her that I was happy to leave the
things of childhood behind. But I was wrong :) I had raised quite a
bit of money from selling sets so I decided I would keep the rest of my
collection...and then I started adding to it again. That was early
1996. I still sell sets occasionally, but I buy a lot more. I have a
huge collection now (about 50,000 pcs.) and I am running out of space to
use it effectively. I have scaled down my buying and plan to spend more
of my hobby time building with what I have. I have really enjoyed the
community aspect of the hobby as well and read LUGNET pretty much on a
daily basis.
