Well, I've thought about this more, and there's really nothing I can do
(that's 100% safe) to correct the problem with the article counts. They
simply permeate the system too deeply, and it would take many hours of
grueling fancy-footwork to pull it off correctly and repair all the places
that feed downstream from the 'active' file which maintains the master
counts.
And even if the article counts could be safely fixed everywhere inside of
the server, reverting to their prior numbers would still confuse newsreaders
and caching NNRP servers in a really bad way.
So I'm afraid we're stuck with the article counts being set to 3 in many of
the UK loc groups. It's not a big deal in groups that do have actual
traffic in them, but it's a bloody unfortunate situation for the empty
groups.
Oh well, I'll just have to figure out a general way to work around this on
the webpages later, so that people browsing the groups don't think there is
actual traffic there and go looking for stuff to read. Maybe it'll have to
stop going by the 'active' file in the server and start using its own
article-accounting system which could ignore cancelled articles.

| (...) Actually, I think I may to have to figure out a way to revert the article counts all back to 2 after all, in order to clean up this situation most properly.
