Gregs original point was that he didnt like the new Legend because it will
appear in the new colors. He was subsequently attacked and invited to leave
LUGNET for bringing up that point of view. So now any mention of the color
change is threadjacking or a violation of the TOS? I think discussion of the colors that a set appears in
is certainly germane, but some seem to disagree.

Discuss colors, great. Its the force and vitriol with which its being done, in
my view. I keep up with many AFOLs across the whole community on a daily
basis, and I think 95% told me they were sick of the attitudes of a few posters
who were not letting the issue die.

I used the term silencing because there have been repeated demands made for
those who refuse to accept the color change to quit posting or leave LUGNET.
I agree that the new .color newsgroup is not silencing, but it does seem to
be a punitive measure designed to pigeonhole certain opinions.

Todd explained that this is not the case.
Nonetheless, Ill add my .02. The extreme nature of a few peoples posts was
really beginning to wear on the majority of people here who just want to enjoy
talking about LEGO. It would not have been right to shut those people up
completely by policy or by threat. The best solution found was to channel them
so they could continue to express themselves, and the rest of LUGNET could
return to normal.
Unless someone actively blocks lugnet.color, theyre going to read the posts,
and see your opinions. I havent done that yet, but Im strongly considering it.
Also, I wish there were filters for particular posters, if there were, I would
have made use of that long ago.
So, its not the opinions themselves that brought this on, but its because they
were unapologetically harsh, refused to tone down, and even questioned the
character of others (regardless of employer, those are very serious
accusations). From everything that I can tell, this was poisoning the main
groups, and frustrating the overwhelming majority of readers.
In my opinion, this is a very welcome and necessary newsgroup, and a very
welcome, but unfortunately necessary wish to channel color discussion there. If
a few against the change had the maturity and even-temper to control themselves,
it would not be necessary.

If you disagree with someone calling TLC stupid, theres nothing stopping you
from replying in that newsgroup and pointing out the counterproductivity and
immaturity of such a post. But if someone says they dont like a Legend
because the colors are wrong, thats off-topic and needs to be shunted to a
separate newsgroup? I dont see the fairness in that.
|
No. But, the problem lies in that this cycle goes on, and on, and on. The
negativity follows an n+1 pattern, and everyone else either had to sit by and
endure it, or felt like they had to join the fight to get those perpetrators to
calm down and be civil.
The lack of civility caused this, make no mistake. If you think thats
ludicrous, then please show that youre above that by the way you conduct
yourself.
