I think you are generalizing too much!
How many kids of today have you raised? 'Here are the instructions and here
are the bits' - is that a way to introduce a kid to a larger project?
I rather believe it's the parents of today that spend too little time together
with their kids, doing things - not just driving them around to different
'activities' organized by someone else, but doing things _together_.
I don't know if my kids are exceptional, or the norm, but they really love the
large sets, even if they happily let me find the right pieces :-)
I _think_ most Lego sets are bought by parents for their kids (I'm
deliberately ignoring AFOLs buying for themselves here) - mostly it's the
parent who decides what to buy, and total cost may have it's say too.
