Great ideas Jonathan!
I received a complementary copy of a USA historic preservation magazine, and
noticed it had a subsription of 675,000. That is a lot of potential folks who
are interested in architecture.
I think that TLG could create some more sets that are not for children, but for
AFOLs, "armchair architects" (like us) and historic preservation folks. I could
see (using some of Jonathans list):
1) a set similar to #6390 Main Street, but with the buildings being Miami Beach
Art Deco district (South Beach) with pastel colored buildings (get some use out
of the more unusual Lego colors).
2) a set similar to #6390 Main Street, but with New England style mullioned
windows ("6 over 6", or "12 over 12") to make a Norman Rockwell style of folksy
town (his model was Stockbridge Massachusetts).
3) a set similar to #6390 Main Street, but with a European medieval look with
guild halls or patrician houses - such as a British "High Street" or continental
"Altstadt" with old buildings and perhaps a city wall gate (such as York,
Rothenburg, Luebeck, Carcassone, Chester, Avila, et al).
4) some Greco/Roman buildings. Such as a Greek Temple and a Roman triumphal
arch. Here is one area that TLG could use juniorization to great effect.
Instead of 2x2 round bricks as columns, TLG could produce 2x2x10 columns (both
plain and fluted), 2x2 Doric, Ionic and Corinthian column tops, and perhaps some
other decorated bricks that look like the entablature, archtrivate, metopes
etc., of Greco-Roman architecture.
These sets could be 4 wall sets (all buildings have 4 walls, no minifigs) and
advertised in Architecture as well as historic preservation magazines. These
sets would be in addition to such current favorites such as the model airplanes
(Sopwith Camel, etc), Statue of Liberty, etc. There could be a supplemental
pack of minifigs to go with each of the above sets, for AFOLs.
