I bet that this set has some great finds.  I understand that the extra 500
pieces will be rather random parts.
...
The randomness of this set interests me. Has LEGO ever released a 'random' set
before?

It isn't truely random, in the sense that a hopper was loaded with a bunch of
different colors of the same part. I see the identical numbers of parts, down to
the colors, in multiple copies, yet some copies have, for instance, six white
half arches and no airplane windows while other copies have three white airplane
windows and no half arches. Also, some copies have predominately brown minifig
heads, while other copies have no brown and mostly sand blue ones.

I'm cataloguing 10 copies to see how many major variations of this set might
exist. So far, no two polybags are exactly the same; some bags are identical in
count, except for a very few color differences, while other bags have many color
differences and some part differences. I'm leaning towards three major
variations presently, although it may be two or four, and maybe my sample count
isn't big enough to really know.

Maybe this set is some kind of test run on TLG's part to see if they can make
unique sets on demand. Wouldn't that be something!

(...) Neat speculation! Those of us that saw Jake's keynote at BrickFest 2004 in DC will recall mention of Lego Factory. Perhaps this IS a test, and like with recipe testing where you eat your first tries, they're selling off the test run results. (...) (20 years ago, 22-Sep-04, to lugnet.general)

(...) Yup. At least (URL) one> set has had slightly variable contents. It wasn't bundled with any other sets, it didn't have any instruction/idea booklets, and it barely had any TECHNIC connectors, so it wasn't very useful as a stand-alone set, but (...) (...) ... (...) ... (...) I'm not done parting out, but it sure looks like there are three major variations. The easiest way to identify the variations is from the 'minifig heads' polybag. Variation 'A' has mostly brown and black heads, but no light (...) (20 years ago, 25-Sep-04, to lugnet.general)

OK, someone brought this to my attention from a Bricklink post. But there is a new 4679 Creator set tub with 1000 pieces (for $19.99), with an extra 500 pieces that looks like they're emptying the rare colors bins at TLG. I just checked the hollow (...)
