No, separate the discussions from these groups.

Even if Todd implemented a "DAT file only" view of each of
these groups on the web site?

I would smile upon that; but still, I do most of my reading through my
nntp client.

How do you follow the threads across groups?  What newsreader do you use?

What do you do when you're in the .cad.dat group and you want to see if
there are any followups yet to the post you're reading?

When you do find a model in the .cad.dat group that you want to view, do you
have a way to view it right from your newsreader or do you go to the web
interface to view it?

There has to be a way of separating the posted models from the
discussions related to them.

Aha.  We're working in opposite directions on this.  :)  I'm working toward
getting discussions (all across the board at LUGNET) as closely coupled with
and linked to data as possible -- physically, metaphysically, logically,
metalogically, mentally, psychologically, sociopsycologically, umm,
foofoologically, umm, metaüberpharmacobiologically, etc.  :-)

If the originating data is inside of the ng system in text form, that means
linking the discussions via threads (automatic) but also keeping them
physically close if necessary, since having them separated physically makes
them separated logically in most newsreaders.  (Very few newsreaders can
follow threads as they migrate across groups.)

If there could be a "DAT file only" virtual ng
to reflect just the models posted, well then...

In step-by-step detail, how would you use a group like this if it existed?
Give examples using a couple or three representative entry scenarios...
