Now, I'm not in the mecha crowd but I do get some enjoyment checking out works
by Eric.  What really got me to post here were those last sentences.  You make
it sound like our LEGO world is just another "yea ... whatever ... yea"
experience, like watch news on tv or something.  Let me tell you something- I
come to LUGNET to get away from that.

A suggestion: Don't just look at the whole but examine (REALLY examine) its
parts, features, little functions, etc.  Look at what was done to achieve the
whole.  You just might find something you could use.  It's worked for me.

Adr.

OMG, now I have to reply (uggg sorry!) Honest, Dave, I really don't want you to
feel that way. I promise if you look close, you'll see all kinds of cool little
things packed in small places and what not.

Often times, I just hope someone will notice a small element or part used in an
odd way. Or hidden with just a part of it poking out in to the open.
I rely on great builders like you Dave to notice things that may seem like
minitia, but as AFoL, I know you'll get.

Silly things like Mail boxes in wierd places, mini-fig caps, greebles, chairs,
insectoid legs and other goofy stuff only nuts like us can pick out.

Dig Dave Dig!
I've checked out your MOCs closely to see how you made them.
Without KYA, your an intriguing builder.
Aren't you glad!

Adrian is on to it! Can you hear me on the Left Coast Syide~!!!

e

Eric,

In light of recent personal events with you, I'm not sure you'll take what I'm
saying favorably or not.

Perhaps if you wrote down in your original post all the improvements you made to
the Mech, people would appreciate it, and look at the images to see what you
have accomplished.  You may even be able to look back on a post in the future
and recall many of the issues.  Perhaps other builders may be inspired by much
of what you wrote, not just what you built as well.  Many of your mechs are not
appreciated in picture form, but more when they are in motion, where you can see
how much movement they have.  Granted, the exteriors of your mechs tend to have
similarities that cause some/many people to overlook develompents and
improvements you've made internally.  Some people who are not Mecha builders
don't understand the complexity involved.

To give you an idea of outward appearance versus internal non-visible
developments, back in Brickfest 02 (I think), I was in the large-scale display
room.  There was a nice racing truck, with a cool outward appearance (it's also
very cool inside, and I know a lot of detail work went into it as the builder is
a personal friend of mine).  I also saw a large A-10 airplane technic MOC.  I
didn't think much of it by it's appearance.  However, when I talked to the
builder, he showed me a lot of really cool things it did.  It had an air (or
spring--I can't remember) powered ejector chair, it had an internal air tank,
complete with a motor to power a cam to pump air into the tank, which was then
used to power landing gear and and open the cockpit.  The flaps and rudders
worked.  Just looking at the model, you couldn't see it.  Technically, it was a
great MOC!  It just didn't have an "oh wow!" appearance.  (Name of builder kept
out of discussion--those who know the builder know why I'm not naming names).
The Truck won best large scale construction, the A-10 didn't.  Did that get the
builder upset?  Maybe for a little while, but I don't think he held a grudge
against it.  Sometimes, as shallow as appearance is, it attracts people to
things.

I think this is the same story with your MOC.  as much of the outward appearance
seems similar to your other MOC's, it's not generating as much of an "oh wow!"
comment, which is causing people to move on, and not think much of your internal
improvements. I personally, did not realize the accomplishments and issues you
went through (as I'm not a huge Mecha builder either) until someone else here
made note of the minute things (i.e. narrower stance, etc), that plague mecha
builders.
Posting pictures and then expecting people to understand everything you went
through is not a realistic view.  Some of the Mecha builders here understand,
because they've done the same thing--but others don't--that's why those others
might need an explanation.

Now, I don't know the details of the whole Scibrick thing (nor do I intend or
want to), but it appears you have a biased opinion of Lenny and Adrian, no
matter what they say, you're going to take it in a negative way.  Please try to
overlook it and see through to what they are really saying, and not as a "oh,
let's bash Eric!" post.  I think you wound up alienating a few others who tried
to post some criticism (and praise) as well.  You never know, perhaps trying a
new head design, or new exterior appearance, in conjunction with those internal
improvements may bring back the "oh, wow!" factor to your MOC's, where people
will talk about them more.  I for one, would love to see that six-foot long
insect once again...

Like Keith said, please try to get some thicker skin.

When people don't understand something you worked hard on, then it's time to
make them understand through explanation.  This is true in everything in the
world.

To sum up:
-Try an explanation of improvements you've made in conjunction with pictures.
-Try new exterior appearances and colors, to complement internal improvements.
-Try not to have a chip on your own shoulder.
-Don't take criticism as negative.
-Try to get some thicker skin.
-Try to get people to understand more often.

-Scott
