That’s a shame, because articulation is at least half of what defines a good mech. It’s akin to ignoring SNOT work or greebling that is particuarily well done.

Not so. Greeblings and SNOT work are both directly related to style and design. Articulation is more about the mechanics, and while it can effect design, it isn’t the focus of design.

The specifics of how the SNOT work is done (ie, using 1x1 w/ 5 stud pieces vs 1x4 brick w/ studs on the side etc), as opposed to the effect of the SNOT work (being the cool new shape, whatever) is a key point here.

Gear work, especially if it is hidden, is about how the MOC was made, and people tend to care about that if they want to build something similiar (ie, how did you do that.. cuz I want to do it). But the techniques of ‘how’ could be equally applied to an entirely new design and style. I dont want to build anything similiar within the next few months or so, so I will focus my comments on what I do know about, which is the design and style.

Since finishing Jama, Eric’s work seems to be following a very clearly designed path. Perhaps the gear works and internal mechanism are moving forward, but the outward design and aesthetic appears static.

What I feel is a shame is that my thoughtful criticism was reacted to a rebuke by you, and a null responce by Eric. It is as if criticism isn’t really welcomed unless it is tied to adulation.

Not unkike how hidden SNOT work does the same. And more often than not, the gearing (...) (19 years ago, 11-Jan-05, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
