Messages posted to a .announce group show up in the "top stories" much more
quickly than mssages not in an .announce group. My cynical nature suggests
to me that this is at least partly the reason it is posted to
(inappropriately) so often.

| (...) Right. The algorithm for determining the entries into top stories automatically gives heavier weight to stuff posted into .announce... a fine example of the law of unintended consequences, subclass "you get what you measure for"... ++Lar (23 years ago, 4-Jan-02, to lugnet.admin.general)
