Well, and of course point (D), which is that even if they say no, it's not
like they have a legal (or perhaps even moral) claim of any magnitude. We
certainly don't need the issues involved with software patents creeping into
playing with Lego!
By asking permission, you're being polite above and beyond the call of duty.
In fact, I'd go so far as to view most such requests not as actual inquiries
for permission but rather a polite way of expressing admiration and
*stating* that one is inspired. Denying the request steps outside of the
normal social expectations.

If this is a concern, why not just wait until the whole thing is complete to
