This _really_ doesn't apply. Copyright covers published works -- you
certainly have copyright over the image you posted to brickshelf, but • that's
all. A patent might apply to the design, but you don't have one of those.

First of all, I am not a lawyer.  All of the following is based on a general
understanding of the law from a layman's point of view.
That being said, I'll continue

As DAT's are plain text, to my understanding they can be copyrighted as an
original work.  Brick-based models would have to be patented, but under the
"pre-existing art" laws, Lego has first rights.  You would have to create an
actual blueprint to patent.

Also, even for things that are covered by intellectual property law, there
is significant protection for non-commercial personal use.

That's true.  He has you there Mladen.

But beyond all of that, this is completely contrary to the spirit of the
Lego online community. Part of the fun of it all is sharing designs and
ideas with others. Otherwise, we'd all be in our rooms playing.

That's 100% opinion, but also (IMHO) 100% true.  My website would be nowhere
without the generous contributions of many people.  Some contributions were
solicited, some were inspirational, some were offered.  I'd be a fool not to
share my models, which is why all of my models will be available for
download as soon as I finish my revamp.

So, in my final post to the Mecha Legs commentary: Mladen has every right to
copyright, only a few rights to enforce, and shouldn't enforce so as to
promote the community.  I recommend that everyone not pester him until its
done anyway.
