Right. As of March 1989, published works do not need to have a copyright
notice in order to gain protection. However, it's still good to put it
there, because apparently "I didn't know that was copyrighted" has been a
successful legal defense in the past.

The proper form of the assertion is to put the first AND the last year that
you worked on the work or its predecessors, as of when it was published.

It also should have the © symbol.

So for example, my black hopper instructions say copyright 1997-1999 because
they were last changed in december 1999, but the instruction cover says
copyright 1997-2000 because I did a new color cover last week.

But would you claim that your copyright prevents someone from looking at
pictures of your model and making a similar one (not for sale) from their
own bricks?

Followup on this to .publish. Let's not take the rest of this discussion
there, though.

(...) Um, check on that? IANAL* but I have heard that the c-in-a-circle is not a good substitute for writing out thw word 'copyright'. I could be misremembering, however - it may have been using (c) (like, in a plan text file) that was not (...) (24 years ago, 20-Jul-00, to lugnet.publish)

(...) Hey look; it's me and Larry in complete agreement. :) The DMCA apparently has a new form of intellectual property for the design of boat hulls. I'm fascinated by all of this, because I know almost nothing about the subject! In lugnet.publish, Larry Pieniazek writes of his quite cool design: (...) I have to say that I am glad that Larry has chosen to allow one to purchase the rights to make unlimited copies for personal use.
