All day yesterday I sat there and debated whether or not I should weigh in on
this ... and come back today, and find I missed the flurry altogether. Ah well,
better late than never ... [WARNING: this is long - I have a tendency to ramble
;)]
I'm mostly just a lurker in .mecha, but I read it daily, and look at everything
avidly. I've seen Mladen's style and capabilities improve drastically over the
last year - I am continuously stunned at the beauty of his designs, and the pace
at which he produces them. It's been extraordinarily pleasant to observe an
artist really developing his or her skills to the point where he becomes a
preeminent contributor, if not a pioneering entity, in the field. Mladen has
certainly done this.
That being said, I was extremely disappointed to read this, to say nothing of
comments that were made (by more than one person) in the bloodbath that ensued.
There were things that were said which were unconstructive, and in some cases,
intentionally intended to hurt or attack someone - perhaps I take such things too
seriously, but I honestly believe, from a *non-religious* standpoint, that
everybody can adopt a moral imperative in their own lives to try to be a "good
person", and try to avoid causing others harm as much as possible. Anyway, I
found these attacks very ... disappointing. It's interesting how people you've
never met can still make you feel let-down, regardless of their intent.
Mladen, we all benefit from seeing your designs. Hopefully you feel that you
benefit from sharing them, either through the praise you receive, the feedback we
provide, or the critque of various aspects of your work. For good or for bad,
that exchange necessitates that your designs enter a public forum, and can thus
be copied as closely as the pictures (or the .dat file) can depict - note, I'm
not making any claims with regard to ethical behavior here, one way or the
other. You may, at some point, consider the costs and benefits of sharing with
the LEGO community - is it worth it to you to share your ideas, at the price that
someone may copy them? That's a personal decision - but I hope (and your recent
posts have given me to suspect) that you do feel its worth it.
We all borrow ideas from each other, consciously or not, when we look at pictures
others have posted. That's one of the primary reasons behind LUGNET, it seems to
me - the exchange of ideas, solutions, concepts, and interaction among
individuals who share a common passion. I think everybody agrees on that.
Copying strikes a different chord with many people - some find it particularly
offensive, others find it agreeable provided credit is given, and others are in
the "no qualms whatsoever" category. Personally, I don't really care if somebody
makes a creation of mine brick by brick - even the ones I've labored for months
over (the AT-AT, for example). I have the satisfaction of knowing that I did
what I did, given the pieces I had and the time constraints. I did my best, and
that's all that matters to me - a very personal perspective, admittedly.
Furthermore, much of what I build has been strongly influenced by "those who came
before". When I can, I give credit. It may be that some people can recognize
elements in my constructions that they feel are attributable to their work, and
which I may have incorporated accidentally, coincidentally, or intentionally - if
it was intentionally, I hope that they are able to recognize the respect that a
conscious decision on my part would convey. At the very least, hopefully people
would be proud if they knew that some of their designs were printed out and
included in one my 3" Ring Binders labeled "LEGO Concepts" that I use for
inspiration and ideas.
Enough philosophising on my part, this seems like a good place for an abrupt end.
