I would reconsider if he was the only person to ask me, but I get 10 e-mails
each day from people asking me how they love my designs and want to use them
in their own. Most of the messages I reply to with a yes, but this time no,
this is my model, and no one else has the right to use it except me. My models
are supposed to inspire creativity (the reason I started my site) not copying,
LEGO is so versatile, anything can be made, so many different combinations. SO
I DON'T WANT ANYONE USING MY DESIGNS ANYMORE!!!

Mladen Pejic, over and out!

Mladen, I agree with you to a point on this one, but I have to say not fully. I
understand your frustration at having someone copy a design which I'm assuming
to quite a bit of time to develope, judging by its complexity.

I have no problem with anyone using my designs, as long as I'm given credit.
I have no problem using other people's designs either. If I borrow on other
people's designs, I post a link back to their site stating specifically that
that is where I got the idea from. I feel that it helps them by giving them the
recognition that they deserve, as well as an additional amount of 'Net traffic.
Besides, I know that I get a warm fuzzy when I see a link to my work on someone
else's site. I'm assuming that they do too. As a side note though, I don't
always ask for permission before I use a design or idea.

DAT files raise another sad point. I've actually had an instance where one of
my DAT files was reposted as someone else's original - without any
modification! The files were identical line for line.

Now I'll preach a little bit about my Web theory... If you don't want something
copied, don't post it. When I post something, I automatically assume that it
will be copied in one form or another, with or without my permission. I don't
like it, but it seems to be true. Thankfully, those who have borrowed on my
designs have either supplied a link to my site, or added one when asked.

I work in the Mechanical Design field where I'm sharing designs with other
people on a constant basis. I don't always get credit there either. I do take a
satisfaction in knowing that when a design is proven that it had my input,
whether or not I designed the whole machine. It's the best, most effecient
design that matters to me.

Hey, you never know... Your design might be improved upon. I've seen it happen
with mine :-)

BTW, check out the Sylph on my site. I've given you a credit spot there.

If you don't mind, I'd like to use a pair of

Thanks Rob, regarding using my legs in your designs, HELL NO!!!
This is not a model I am willing to be copied!!!

Mladen, please reconsider.  One of the best ways for our models to improve is
to promote cross-pollenation of ideas.  As long as credit to you is duely
given, can you see any possible disadvantage to letting others use your • ideas?

Cheers,

(...) Copying it and claiming credit, sure, that's not nice. But just copying the idea is _fine_. (...) This may be copyright infringement. Taking those dat files and building a model from them wouldn't be. (24 years ago, 19-Jul-00, to lugnet.build.mecha, lugnet.underground)
