Mike,

Suzanne just cautioned me that I might be taking a too-hasty approach here.
So for tomorrow morning, just post wherever you think is best.  After I wake
up, I'll pick up the data out of your posting and deposit it into the data
file which is used to generate the new specials lists -- like last week's:
<http://www.lugnet.com/lsahs/display.cgi?19981228>

Maybe by next Monday we'll have something set in stone.

Now back to possibilities -- I think this is a list of the reasonable
options that we have so far:

1.  Newsgroups: lugnet.announce
    Followup-To: lugnet.general

2.  Newsgroups: lugnet.general,lugnet.announce

3.  Newsgroups: lugnet.general,lugnet.buy-sell-trade,lugnet.announce

Advantages of a .lsahs group:  (1) covers all of LSAHS -- not just phone
specials; (2) good in terms of FAQ.

Disadvantages of a .lsahs group:  (1) obscure ng name; (2) covers more than
specials -- less cool by mail.

Advantages of a .specials group:  (1) wider coverage than only LEGO SAHS.

Disadvantages of a .specials group:  (1) loss of opportunity to bring
together S@H discussions under one roof; (2) covers more than S@H specials,
which may or may not be cool by mail.

--

Related question:  Is there a word in the same vein as "specials" that
encompasses all of the following:  (a) S@H phone specials, (b) %-off sales
at retail chains, (c) repeatable [not one-of-kind] FOTW's, and (d) coupon
awareness?

--

I can't get my brain un-stuck from dearly favoring the idea of a separate ng
for "all things S@H" -- even if traffic is low -- but I'm not sure that it
really truly belongs in the .market subtree.  The .market tree was designed
as a high-traffic, high-noise, person-to-person marketplace area rather than
a shopping discussion area.  In fact, here are the charters for the .market
tree:

   lugnet.market.*  (hierarchy)
Virtual marketplace where people can buy/sell/trade/auction LEGO
      items

   lugnet.market.auction  (group)
Auction announcements, updates, listings, and analysis; NOTE: this
group is the ONLY group where auction announcements or updates are
      appropriate

   lugnet.market.buy-sell-trade  (group)
Community trading post, items wanted, items for straight sale (no
      auctions), experiences, market analysis, etc.

Let's revisit the idea of the .shopping tree which was brought up in
September -- I forget why it got canned anyway.  Here it is from memory,
with modifications:

   lugnet.shopping.*  (hierarchy)
LEGO shopping discussions, experiences, and announcements:  the
what, where, when, why, and how-to of the art of finding and buying
      LEGO

   lugnet.shopping.lsahs  (group)
Discussions about LEGO Shop-At-Home Service:  phone specials,
experiences, catalog availability, hints, tips, etc.

   lugnet.shopping.online  (group)
      Experiences, listings, etc.

   lugnet.shopping.retail  (group)
Sales, experiences, etc. about retail stores selling LEGO

   lugnet.shopping.second-hand  (group)
Finding LEGO at second-hand stores, garage sales, etc. --
experiences, wisdoms, when and how to look, etc.

or perhaps all of it (including the S@H phone specials) could be lumped into
a single lugnet.shopping group if there were strong objections about
separate sub-groups.

But before objecting to 3 or 4 or 5 subgroups in a .shopping hierarchy, keep
in mind that messages in these ng's stay around forever and become
back-browseable references as they move forward.  So even though the traffic
in any one group may be small, over time stuff's easier to go back and look
up because things're more focused.  It's also easier for someone to get
caught up in a specific topic area they're interested in if they're just
joining the fray -- and there are many new users here each week.

I want to see as much traffic offloaded out of lugnet.general as possible --
wherever and whenever recurring topics occur enough to warrant a separate
newsgroup.

Here's a perfect example of a thread dying for a new home --

   http://www.lugnet.com/news/thread.cgi?lugnet.general:1820

every single one of the six messages in that thread is 100% on-topic to a
lugnet.shopping.retail newsgroup (if there was one).  The thread isn't
"off-topic" in lugnet.general, but it's not as "on-topic" as it would be in
a more shopping-focused group.  (Again, I'm not pointing any fingers at
annyone on that thread -- it seems like the right place for it, currently.)

But as much as lugnet.general is for "general-interest" discussions --
meaning of general interest to everyone -- it's really intended as well a
miscellaneous or "catch-all" newsgroup for things that don't have a clear
home elsewhere.

OK, I gotta get to bed.  I'm really psyched on this .shopping thing.

(...) Minor point: you're thinking of a .lsah group, not .lsahs. .lsah would cover all of S@H, .lsahs would be just the specials. (...) How about .lsah.specials? Then at some time a 'real' .lsah group could be created, if there was sufficient need. (...) (26 years ago, 4-Jan-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

(...) Good-deals?? It's not A word but it is broader, but restrictive enough (I thought of "deals" but that might be taken as a place to describe deals gone bad, etc..) (26 years ago, 4-Jan-99, to lugnet.admin.general)
