I just took a few steps toward implementing the structure above, and while
"ld" doesn't look too bad in the ng names, it looks *terrible* when it
appears in a URL in the Location/Address boxes of NN & MSIE. :-(
Compare:

and
http://www.lugnet.com/cad/ldraw/parts/
Maybe it's because of the sans-serif typeface in combination with tall
skinny slash (/) characters, or maybe it's because, psychologically, URLs on
average tend to make more sense than cryptic ng names, but in any case I now
very much dislike the abbreviation "ld" (in this context, not others) and
feel very strongly that it should say the full word "ldraw" instead.
I'm sorry ever for suggesting "ld"! =:*O
So.
One last round (I hope!) of brainstorming...
Since LDraw is 90% of what "CAD" means in the context of LEGO toys, and
since ldraw.org is now a reality, and since at least two other LEGO-related
CAD tools can work with LDraw data, it seems entrenched (in a good way) as
The Way of Things. So what about moving it up a notch in the ng hierarchy?
(As before, [R] denotes "reserved for future expansion.")

This way, (1) there is much less need to abbreviate .ldraw => .ld, less need
to abbreviate .software => .sw [hi, Sproat!] and (2) the newsgroup names are
given much more convenient and intuitive URLs -- for example:
http://www.lugnet.com/ldraw/parts/ [pretty good]
instead of
http://www.lugnet.com/cad/ldraw/parts/ [not bad, but not great]
or
http://www.lugnet.com/cad/ld/parts/ [pretty gunky]
Generally, I want to like this arrangement, but I'm a bit uncomfortable
about its psychological distance from the .cad.* hierarchy.
On the other hand, it's so darn compelling and attractive as options go.
I'm gonna give this a whirl on the webpages -- so nobody freak out just yet;
this is just going to be a test to get a better feel for whether it's better
or worse than the other options. It won't mean creating any ng's just yet,
and the test is completely reversible.

| (...) Welp, it feels nice to move around in, but it SURE feels disjointed from the rest of the CAD stuff, which makes it no fun at all in the final analysis. Cross-linkages could repair some of that, but that's just a band-aid, and it would just (...) (26 years ago, 24-Apr-99, to lugnet.cad.dev, lugnet.admin.general)
