Do you make multiple versions of one portion of a model, especially
something
such as arranging gears and such to fit into the structure? How many?
I find that I usually can get satisfactory results after about three to
eight
steps of refinement.

Even if I can't model the real thing exactly, I try to put the parts that are semi-equivalent in similar places to achieve some of the more subtle visual and mechanical (such as weight and centre of gravity) effects of the real thing.
