I would like to know wether the NXT will control the
PF IR link motors if someone has already tried this.

Yes, the IRLink can control the PF IR receiver. For instance, here is autonomous
Bulldozer sumo, using only slightly modified stock kits "driven" by NXTs:

Thanks for the info Brian. The video looks like a lot of fun was had by all.
I'm glad LEGO enabled this ability to expand the NTX into the PF.

I seem to recall someone indicating they couldn't
control the new RC train motors via the PF IR
controller.

I believe you can, although I don't have an IR train to confirm it with. The
NXT-G block to control the IRLink has been updated on occasion, so perhaps they
didn't have the right firmware on the sensor to do it.

Notice that in the video, there are as many as 8 motors being independantly
controlled: each bulldozer used two PF channels, and each channel can control
two motors, so crosstalk isn't a huge issue... until you go above 8 motors,
anyway.

3:both types of  of the new motors. the other sets
appear to have only one or the other type of motor.

The Bulldozer actually has four motors: two medium, and two XL, as well as two
receivers, a single remote, & the battery box.

yup, well the Dino set was on sale and TRU gave me a coupon to boot, so I got
two for around $110. I haven't seen the bulldozer in a brick and mortar  store
yet and my extra budget went into these two sets. I'm really glad to see the new
PF motors available at LEGO.com as separate items. I've always enjoyed the good
ideas and videos everyone posts here on LUGNET. With this new expansion to the
NXT/PF series, I expect we'll see even more multi-function creations.

thanks again for the info!

John
