They are pretty tough, I use them all the time to support the steering arms
of the steered wheels on very heavy vehicles. One of these has approximately
2 kg bearing down on them, and has driven up hill and down dale no bother
for years.
I suspect the old fringed half bushings split apart because they had a tight
fitting axlehole, whereas the end of the technic plates were not tight
fitting.
I've only come across one of these pieces that was broken, and it was that
way when I bought it second hand. Perhaps if you subject it to angular force
it may break, but in the normal way of use I've found no problems.
