Hi,

last of my today's spam flood ;-)

As I've built Backhoe yesterday, I still don't get that Lego move. Why
did they replace _ALL_ technic bricks with studless beams? I think that
the beams have 'right to live', for styling the outer parts they're
invaluable and models look better.

But the traditional approach of building from bottom to top (few technic
bricks, some plates, some additional bricks and 90deg beam connections
is IMO much more logical _and_(!) in line of previous Lego experience of
the builder. This studless way of building is IMO much more complicated
and completely different when compared to traditional Lego brick
building. Not mentioning that attaching a beam to 4-5 pins is a pain.

So the questions are:
1) What was first set without stud?
2) Have anybody tested backhoe on animals^H^H^H^H^H^H^H children? Is it
really possible that 11 years old could assemble it without problems?
3) Have anybody of you tried to build studless MOC?
4) Should we bother TLC with this issue too?

Personally I'm happy that they have the studless beams, however, I also hope
that they keep having the "old" style stud beams.

I tend to stick more to robotics (Mindstorms), my recent trebuchet was a rare
deviation away from robotics (it was built mostly with all studless beams, by
the way). Any ways, the reason I like the new studless beams, is that there are
times when you don't need the studded beams. I tend to mix and match when I
build, if I need the studs I use the studded beams if I don't I use the studless
beams. The new and old styles of Technic are easy to use with each other.

The only thing I don't like it that it is harder to make 90 degree angles with
the studless beams, and the fact that the Mindstorm set was not designed to work
with the studless beams. The RCX can connect easily, but the sensors and motors
can't. Only the touch sensor can easily be connected to studless beams, as long
as you have something for it to rest on that is.

Basically as long as Lego keeps making both I will be happy.
