So, they both are a good thing.

Agreed, and I wrote that in my original message.

Studless plus studded beams give us *more* options, than just studded beams.
This enriches the possibilities for MOCs.  This is a good thing in my humble
opinion.

Agreed.

Were there no studded beams available in any of the technic sets for 2003?

Peeron is down right now. I'll try to do a search as it goes up. But
looking in the 2003 catalog, none of the 'Technic' sets seem to have
them. Don't know about Bionicle/Star Wars/Racers though. Few technic
bricks are available in Designer Sets.

I for one will be very unhappy if you somehow make LEGO stop creating studless
beams.  If LEGO were to stop making studded beams, I would be equally upset.

Does it *have* to be an exclusive decision?

Nooo, I like the studless beams. Just I don't think it's good to make
studless-only sets as they're too different and you need totally
different approach while building them, making it less
flexible/compatible.
