My understanding of SNOT is that it was originally just building stuff sideways,
like the round wing on his disc-racer:

It has since evolved to incude a wide variety of building techniques, all of
which have one thing in common. There aren't any studs on top.

Of course it is. You use sideways mounted TECHNIC bricks for enhancing the
structural integrity all the time. I'm actually curious now as to whether that
might even be the original inspiration for SNOT.

I think that has more to do with the intended result of building SNOT. If
you're doing it purely for function, it's rather utilitarian and thus not very
exciting. If you're doing wild and crazy things just to achieve a particular
look, that's an entirely different matter.
