I have had some of the same feelings. I think 1999 really was a banner year.
Like you, I watched like a hawk for the first sets to appear, making guesses
in LDraw while I waited. I must admit, in retrospect, that I went a bit
overboard. The sets were pretty great though, and went a long way toward
reviving hope for Lego in general. They also satisfied 20 years worth of
pent-up demand.
This year, I just didn't have quite the excitement for the new sets, so I'm
holding off on the bigger sets 'till I can get a good deal on them. The
"gotta have it now" mentality is gone. I already have A- and B- wings which
IMHO beat out the TLG sets.
Of course, it could also be that I'm still recovering from (non-SW) Christmas
Lego purchases, which included a bunch of big Technic sets. My son just
finished his Space Shuttle last week, and I've not yet completed my Super
Car. Maybe by the time April rolls around, I'll be in more of a buying mood.
