I actually have a design for a very large spacecraft that I can build (I've
done all the proof-of concept models) whose hull is made up entirely of
baseplates (including roadplates for the hangar bay) but to build it would
involve buying a bunch of large grey baseplates and cutting them up to • proper
shape and size, which (1) would really make a lot of people mad, and (2) • would
make it a royal pain to LDraw.

That sounds really cool, and maybe a little frightening.

If you want to cut up parts, baseplates are probably the ones to start
with.  I've cut up a raised riverplate, after it got stepped and cracked.

As far as LDrawing, that would be difficult.

Not _that_ difficult if you were willing to learn the basics of part creation.
I can't think of an easier part to model than a plain baseplate.  Just 6
surfaces and a bunch of stud.dat's.  I guess the rounded corners would add a
level of difficulty, but you could just cut all those off anyway.

I bet Steve could add a "custom baseplate" extension to his LDAO gridder with
a few keystrokes :-)

Since you'd have to inline them, many different configurations could add up to
some big files though.
