What they need to do is make it like a PDA with a compact flash slot. Then
you could expand as needed. You could connect two controllers to communicate
via 802.11 or bluetooth, etc.

Or a CPU with CAN? It would be fairly cheap. Connect everything with 1-2
wires.

The minimum I/O would be what they have already in the RCX, plus 4-8 more
ports for sensors. The RCX should have a smaller footprint ( ipod size )
with a built-in rechargeable battery ( via solar, USB, Firewire and wall
plug ).

A smaller footprint would require different connectors for everything,
instead of the 2x2s, but why not? What would be so bad about that?

If the sensors and motors had some smart ICs to allow addressing, then they
could be connected to a bus ( i.e. stacked for power, ground and control ).

I think we're starting to cross the boundary that lego faces, they want this
thing to be used by kids ( and I guess adults now also ). If they jam a ton
of I/O in the controller, the cost goes up, parents may tend not to buy it
for their kids. But if they don't add more I/O, the adults will look
elsewhere for a more powerful controller.

Is there anyone else out there developing something? ( besides JCX ). Is
lego even doing anything here? I would imagine if they were we would have
heard about it by now, so I am assuming they are not. I'm surprised there
isn't an "open source" hardware and software project for this right now...

I'm giving a presentation about Mindstorms on Wednesday. I have a slide • near the
end that talks about all the stuff I know people want to see added. Here's • what
I have so far:

RCX
===

* RC communication (but keep the IR port, too)
* more I/O ports
* faster processor
* more memory
* bring back the AC adapter jack
* DCC for use with LEGO Train sets

New / Improved Sensors
======================

* more sensitive / better light sensor (can see color, not just light • intensity)
* more sensitive rotation / angle sensor (especially at very low  or very • high
  speeds)
* motion / distance / proximity sensor
* pressure sensor
* sound sensor
* magnetic sensor
* gyro or compass direction sensor

Mechanical Things
=================

* servo motor
* solenoid
* helical gear

What else do people want to see? Don't worry too much about mechanical • TECHNIC
stuff, like different gear sizes or gear blocks. For example, I'd like to • see
some helical gears created, but that's more of a mechanical issue than a
Mindstorms issue. I don't know what else people would want for robotics • besides
a servo motor and possibly a solenoid, anyway.

So, please tell me what else the RCX needs and what other sensors would be • good
to have. I'll still take mechanical improvements, too. Thanks.

(...) Reading this thread, I am struck by one thought: who would actually pay for a souped-up RCX with intelligent sensors and BlueTooth in every sensor? I could see BlueTooth in every RCX, but it would be overkill for talking with sensors. A (...) (21 years ago, 5-Nov-03, to lugnet.robotics)
