I guess I'll represent the populace of the Official Lego MindStorms Forums
here.
We've had a discussion going on this very topic (mechanical and
mindstorms-specific) for about four years now on and off. As with most
forums we often go off-topic, but there are scads of wishes in this discussion.

If that link doesn't work, which is rather likely due to the way the forum
software works, you can still get in. Go to http://mindstorms.lego.com,
click on the Forums button on the lower header bar, click through the TOS
and enter the "Dear Lego" folder. Then click on the discussion entitled
"Dream Add-ons" or something to that effect.
