The bot should start not in the airspace that is denoted as common, which in the
case of the C4 robot, was the baseplate that held the game board.  For us, it's
the Tic Tac Toe grid, but not necessarily the page borders.

This was going to eliminate the need for "registration" marks, and the
need for everyone to have the Cannon EP-1 Super LAZER 3-4H printer.

Well, you don't need the same printer, but you do need the grid to be aligned to some reference, eg, you need to be the same distance X and Y from the corner.   And you need the robot to sit up at the reference mark.

Printers don't print aligned every time to the edge of the paper.  You're
assuming that if you butt your robot up to the edge of the paper and on your PDF
there's six studs from the corner to the edge, it'll be that every time.  But it
isn't, because the printer has alignment issues feeding in the page, and how
well it grips etc.

For example:

         |              |
---------------------------------- <----- offset ------> | edge of page
         |              |

The above offset varies.

What printers DO do, is keep the distance between crop marks on the page and the
# correctly, because that part is actually imaged to the drum in precise
alignment.

         |              |
---------------------------------- <-- offset --> |       | edge of page
         |              |                       mark

This offset doesn't vary, because both marks are made by the printer.

Seeing as your fantastic temporary page doesn't have these crop marks to align
the robot to, it's useless.

The idea was KISS.  Everyone has access to 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Even my
poor FIRST DRAFT of the game board lined up in the center of the page.

Again, you're assuming the # will be in the center.  Printers don't feed
consistently.

With just the plain paper, and the # grid, then it was an easy matter to
have your space defined as ANYWHERE in the L shape, NOT on the page.
This is what I meant:
This is simple, and has less chance for error:

No, it doesn't, because the # literally floats left to right depending on how
you shove the paper in or how the printer eats it.

This is way more complex and has a higher chance of people printers
messing it up.

No, it doesn't, because the crop marks are made by the imager and are more
precise.

That and a 11" page doesn't align to studs.  And of course, neither does your #,
because you didn't bother to measure that against studs, inches or any other
form of known measurement.

But far be it from me to suggest you use some logic or wait until we all come to
a consensus on size, marker type, air space, dimensions or anything else.  Go
right ahead and keep putting out half assed first drafts and confusing
everybody.

OK, stupid suggestion coming up... Why not print a board that is guaranteed to fit in every printer and then fold (or cut) to that outline? Ralph (18 years ago, 14-Aug-06, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
