As I understand, there used to be prejudice against left-handed people.
Even until fairly recently; teachers and parents would try to 'switch'
left-handed students to be right-handed.  I've never experienced any
kind of negative prejudice because I'm left-handed, and I don't
seriously expect I ever will.

Indeed. I was startled to find out that my SO (age 43) was forced to use
his right hand to write with instead of his left in elementary school by
having his hands beaten with a ruler if he used the wrong one! The
effects still show in his labored, barely legible writing and his hatred
of writing. Apparently the teacher regarded left-handedness as actually
*evil* in some way.

I have a friend who went to a Catholic school. They tied his left hand behind
his back for years because they said it was satanic. I believe they get this
from the Biblical references to Jesus sitting on the right hand of God;
metaphorically, the right hand is used as a place of power or authority.

As a lefty myself, I service furniture in customers homes in Miami. The Puerto
Ricans, when they see me writing with my left hand, will always say "No vas a
ir a cielo" which means "you won't go to heaven".
