What about those collectors who collect memorabilia like dishes just • because
they have been used by Hitler himself? That's the pure fascination with
something gloomy and cruelly. That's nothing to do with the aesthetics.

How does collecting dishes hurt society?

People collect all kinds of things used by famous figures in history.  Their
fascination is more with a tangible connection to historical events than
agreement and support of those events.  Others might even collect things
from individuals they disagree strongly with.  In a society that holds high
regard for personal posessions, it might be considered an insult to allow
them to fall into the hands of "the enemy" of that famous person.  So, a
Jewish person might think it a small form of personal revenge to own one of
Hitler's dinner plates.  Hitler would ceartainly dissaprove - so it could be
seen as some small way to torment him for eternity.

The point is, you have no way of knowing what people are thinking - yet you
choose to irrationally assume the worst.

I agree. I don't want the censors to censor the gallery. But I question • the
sense of the currently practised censorship on BrickShelf.
Oh, and I used free speech, I posted my concerns to Lugnet, didn't I? ;)

You ceartainly did - and I think it's much better to discuss things that
offend people publicly rather than sweeping them under the rug.

The funny thing about this is that at first you were offended because you
thought the models glorified the Holocaust in some way, but it turns out
that the person may simply be making fun of the USA by referring to the the
"United Fascist States".  I think that is a more plausible explanation,
given the current global political climate.  Does that offend you any less?

Have you communicated with the person who built the Lego models in • question
and explained your concerns yourself?  The alternative is to hide behind • a
moderator who simply opresses - and doesn't engage the offender or • otherwise
question their views.  I prefer the community approach to maintaining • order
in a community - not central authority.

No. I didn't know how to contact him.

That might be cool functionality to add.

But he gave the folder a quite clear description. Clear for those being • able to
read German, that is. He brought his innocent red and grey LEGO creations • into a
questionable context. Lucky who doesn't see connotations between the words
"fascistic"/ "German Reich" with the so called "Third Reich" from the • 1930ies
and 40ies! However, this connotation is clear, and I claim who brings
"fascistic" and "German Reich" together knows what he is doing. Even more • when
he brings up a "new" Reich. That lessens the innocene in my eyes.

I think Jim Dolan's take on things makes more sense.  Just some European who
is trying to draw paralells between the US and the fascist reich.

Rest assured, as long as I am alive in the US, I will do my best to fight
Fascists everywhere I find them (along with Socialists). :P

I agree that an individuals rights end when they impinge on another
individual's rights.  I don't however believe that you have a *right* to • not
be offended.

That's true. Some people are even offended by the tax return :-)

They probably see it as an encroachment on their rights.  I have no problem
helping the poor and needy - I do this on my own *with* taxes.  But when
someone uses my tax dollars to build a sports arena I cannot afford to visit
myself - then I am offended by that.

People are *taught* to be offended.  There is no such thing as a bad • word
without public consensus.

That's actually what I think, too. Being offended is mostly the outcome of
socialisation and education.
I for example was taught about the Third Reich that it was evil. And they • told
us good arguments that proved this assumption. So this is why I can't • stand
people who are ignorant enough to find it "cool."

Well, look at the bright side of WWII.  Ever since, the people of the world
have been unainmous in the view that ethnic clensing is evil - and they step
in to stop it...  eventually.  Though not everyone has learned the lesson.
We need only to look to the Darfur region of Sudan for evidence of that.  At
least the International community is moving against it...  even if it is
painfully slow.

I can understand that since you can't vote.  On the other hand, we might
invade your country next - unless it already has a McDonalds! :P

Harhar! Well, we have been standing between Scylla and Charybdis: Should • we stay
away from the Iraq and await the GIs attacking Berlin instead, or would we • help
bombing Bagdad and await the terrorists attacking Berlin? It's like • chosing
between plague and cholera....

From the news I've been reading, it looks like you'll be seeing a lot fewer
US troops in Germany.  I'm fine with that.  I think Germany can take care of
itself from a defense standpoint.

From what I understand, most of the US war supplies go through Rammstein.
Surely terrorists know this, and see this as German aid.  As such, it
probably wouldn't rule out terrorist acts against Germany.

The Germans I know seem to love America through thick and thin.  One of them
was helped by "The Berlin Airlift" as a child.  I guess he finds it
difficult to forget.

I think in the long run, US aid and the spread of US culture is a more
powerful weapon than anything the military has to offer.  Blue jeans and
rock & roll seemed to do more to advance the fall of communism than any
weapon.

Oh, and I prefer Burger King.

What do they call a Whopper in Europe? ;)

Hello! (...) Yes, the Nazis were quite good at this. And you may be intelligent enough to differentiate between the aesthetic shape of the Nazi brand and the not at all excusable ideology. But I highly doubt everybody is able to differ or even wants (...) (20 years ago, 19-Aug-04, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
