Well, sometimes sad stories have happy endings. I received the package today
(fortunately I was holding out until tomorrow to send more money). It arrived
safely, with a September 25 postmark on the Post Office printed "stamp". It was
mailed in a padded envelope with almost unacceptable packing (the parts were
wrapped in tissue paper). The package was properly addressed and shows no signs
of abuse or anything. Must have slipped into a dark corner or something.
In contrast, I also received a package of 3 Ladybird LEGO Pirate books from the
UK. The three books were packed inside a resealable plastic bag, that was
wrapped in bubble wrap, and the whole thing wrapped with heavy paper.
This just reminded me of one friends experience with a mailed item. The
automated handling system was misreading the zip code continuously. The item
was almost black with markings from the handling and sorting equipment.
Apparently it took several trips to the incorrect zip code, was returned, put
back in the automated sorter sending it right back to the wrong zip code. I
think my friend postulated that it finally kicked out of the infinite loop when
the sorting equipment had smudged things up enough that it could no longer read
the address, and finally kicked it out for manual sorting.
