Heh, I loved the big explorien mothership. And I even found a very
aesthetically pleasing way of using the cockpits - as wings. My final
creation before my dark ages was an amalgamation of all my space lego
building ability. I stole the dual cockpit idea from the Space Police II
sets, and I made use of a heap of parts that many people said couldn't be used.
Bear in mind my entire collection was only a couple of thousand pieces, you
can see the model here (it totaled around 250 pieces).

It has been moderated for ages now, so it's publicly viewable.
The unique angle of the explorien cockpit made them great "lower wings" with
a heap of weapon mounting capacity :).
