Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Jonathan Wilson
Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us" in auctions, sales, trades etc? (25 years ago, 7-May-00, to lugnet.general)

Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Shiri Dori
(...) Because shipment to other countries, or even more so, other continents, is much more expensive than shipping inside the US. It is often more risky, too. hth, -Shiri (25 years ago, 7-May-00, to lugnet.general)

Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Tore Eriksson
(...) I don't agree that it is more risky - at least not in relatively non-corrupt countries - and anyway winner pays the shipping. /Tore (25 years ago, 7-May-00, to lugnet.general)

Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Mike Stanley
(...) It isn't so much the expense for me, as I just pass the expense along to the buyer. It is the unclear nature (to me) of how much packages cost to ship overseas. The dimensions of the boxes matter as much as the weight and I don't think the web (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-00, to lugnet.general)

Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Todd Lehman
(...) Good question! There's the cost thing (see MikeS's reply) and then there's the time/effort thing (and maybe even other things). I'll cover the time thing: If you live in the U.S. and you're sending a significant number of packages to other (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-00, to lugnet.general, lugnet.market.shipping)

Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Kevin Wilson
Interesting question Jonathan, I've always wondered that! As a parts seller in Canada, 95% of my packages go outside the country, 90% of those to the US. For the kinds of small packages that most Lego parts orders need, I just use the small packet (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-00, to lugnet.general)

Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Rich Manzo
(...) The reason why I only ship to the US is because I know how much everything will cost. I know that all sets under 2 lbs will cost $3.20 to ship which helps me to reply to my customers faster, which makes the transaction quicker. If I had to (...)         Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Dave Johann
(...) Recently, I gave up my collectible card game sales business. It was tough dealing with foreign countries due to restrictions from: a) my bank and b) the US Postal Service. Sometimes I couldn't accept a check drawn on foreign funds (Canada), (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-00, to lugnet.general)

Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Paul Ferguson
I've got to second what Dave Johann writes. Having lived in the UK for about two years over two different time periods, I can say that, on average, the U. S. banking system simply isn't prepared to deal with international currency transactions (in (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-00, to lugnet.general)

Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Shiri Dori
Sadly, you're right. Other countries have interest in foreign exchange, and often have to contract deals in USDs. The US, OTOH, is ruling the market and thus does not care (as much) about other currencies. That's too bad for other countries. I'll (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-00, to lugnet.general)

Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Tore Eriksson
I really look forward to a secure money transaction service with reasonable fees, but so far I haven't seen any.          Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Jonathan Wilson
(...) That, my friend is why they invented the money order: reasonably cheap for the buyer, costs nothing the for the casher (I think, dont quote me on this) and is accepted worldwide (you just get it in the correct currency). The buyers end (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-00, to lugnet.general)

Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Tom Stangl
Intl MOs are available in the US from the USPS. NOTE, however, that for many countries, the entire process to get your IPMO can take WEEKS.           Re: Why do so many people say "I will only ship to the us"? —Paul Ferguson
Thanks, Tom, for reminding me why this was such a problem. What you didn't add was that you can't lock in the exchange rate when you pay the local Post Office.
