I like to build from instructions, too. Either instructions of released sets, ideabooks published by Lego or 'third party' instructions. Has anyone else noticed this? It seems newer 1x6 & 1x8 bricks have a different mold. See this comparison: (URL) older brick on the left has holes in the bottom studs, but more importantly, the flanges on studs 2 & 4 don't go all the way to the (...) Dear Lego, This tub would sell. Add some trees, a few horses and maybe a peasant figure or two - with pitchforks.
