There might be 4 or 5 (or more) sub-categories of classic Space -- for

collection of sets.

I'm relieved to see you say this.  I've always recognized 'classic'
space to have several 'generations', although they overlap a lot.  It's
tempting to classify the 3-digit sets together, but that style clearly
continued into the 4-digit numbering system.  6861 (X-1 Patrol Craft)
and 6970 (Beta-1 Command Base) continue the blue/grey/yellow style, for
example, and I think belong in some kind of meta-category with the
original 3-digit sets.  (6970 had town-style windows, but they were
still yellow)  But in the same year they released 6901 (Mobile Lab)
which was obviously a new color sceme ...

I -almost- made sub-categories of the so-called "classic" Space in the
Fibblesnork LEGO Guide but was talked out of it (I think by Steve Bliss) by
being shown many examples of boundary-straddling sets.  But the FLG has
hard-line boundaries, so even if it didn't make sense there, it doesn't have
to be that way anymore...  With fuzzy boundaries, we can organize classic
Space by color scheme/components or by neo-faction or whatever.  Probably
about half of the classic Space sets fall into clear categories, but the
other half are really tough to peg.  I don't have any clear thoughts/
opinions/suggestions yet on how things might/oughtta be organized, but I'm
way gung-ho, yes, on making a possibility.  :)

(...) Note: it probably wasn't me. I *think* FLG has been around longer than I have (my roll-call form says "late 1995"). Steve (26 years ago, 11-Jan-99, to lugnet.admin.database)
