The trick and folly with robotics is anthropomorphic thinking. Even though we can use our hand to pick up a quarter, why would you design something that complicated for the task? What is the "most valuable" part ever recieved from lego, because it was missing from a set. Go basicly on size but some parts such as silver/gold parts or electrical parts are worth more. I think both the catapult and slingshot would be very impressive devices. However, the biggest problem I see with both of these (and particularly with the catapult) is that they involve significant linear acceleration and deceleration of structures (...) I prototyped a catapult design several months ago that used two motors to "cock" and fire/launch a rubber-band driven ball-launcher. I think that's a really good idea. I tried it, and found out that the motor recieving power spins slower than the motor you spin. This is about 4:3. Steve, I don't think that something of your scale is impossible by parting out blue tubs. There are 120 2x4 bricks in a tub. That would mean you need to part out 42-84 tubs. I've found using the dark grey 1.5 size connector fits nicely over the microscouts "eye" very nicely. Using sellotape to fatten the ends of the fibre optic cable, it fits snuggly inside. The motors included with the RIS have flywheels, that might help a bit (but you might need to gear it up some?). I don't think it's nonintuitive. I think it makes sense to have the output go to the same directory as the input. In this part I have hard-coded the torso in white so the part colour controls the coloured detail on the torso. This allows the same part to be used for the Black/Blue/Red/Yellow versions. The other thing I played around with was attaching a 1x16 beam directly onto the older faster spinning technic motors. I was checking to see if NQC already does have an option to spit bytecodes to stdout (-L would work, if rcxcomm would understand the format) and I came across something that seems nonintuitive to me. The default output file is "named the same as the (...) (25 years ago, 13-Jan-00, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.nqc)

Just the other day a friend and I had a go at building a lego shooter. The aim was to fire 2x2 bricks. After a couple of designs, the most successful turned out to be a slot shooter. Ah, yes, using two wheels on each side to accelerate the balls will provide better traction. I was envisioning the wheel as a direct tangent to the sphere ...
