Many people have asked what colors are currently considered "universal" or
locked. This means that these colors will almost certainly never be changed.
Universal colors are colors that we consider to be untouchable for change.

While the final list of extended "locked" colors has not been finalized yet, at
minimum, the universal colors will include:

- red
- green
- blue
- yellow
- white
- black
- new light gray
- new dark gray
- new brown

This list will grow from what I understand, as decisions are made internally in
the next couple of weeks about what colors do should be added to this list.

But for sure, the colors above are locked, and considered universal. They're
here for the very long term. Like a good club, once you're on the list, you're
on the list.

(...) red green blue yellow white black new light gray new dark gray new brown Funny thing: Remove the 3 new colors, add back the 3 old colors plus tan (I'm indifferent to tan, but I know a lot of people love it) and I would bet 9 out of 10 of us (...) (...) ... Hi, and at the purple colour you have to think about a little more, how the exact colour has to look like, hmm? What other colours will you try in a wild mix in one set like the HP-bus? Maybe some sorts of tan in the next starwars-set? Or (...) (21 years ago, 6-May-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.lego)

(...) I wondered about some numbers, so I consulted Peeron: Those named above are 9 most used colours (minus the 'new' word, of course). These account for 91% percents of parts used in all sets. Original Gray is #2 (15.4%), DkGray #7 (3.9%), Brown (...) (21 years ago, 6-May-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.lego)
  LEGO sucks!

Jake, please, please shut up! Do you believe what you are writing? We don`t need your way of community development. I give you a good hint: Look for another job! We don`t trust in any word from you nor TLC. Tomorrow white will die, then red, (...) (21 years ago, 6-May-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.lego)

(...) What broad sided the AFOL community was the fact that I'm sure everyone here assumed that all of these colors were fixed (including the old grays and brown). Grays and browns have been around seemingly forever. It's crushing to know that those (...) (21 years ago, 6-May-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.lego)

(...) "almost certainly" - There is the wiggle-room again. To be trustworthy one has to be reliable. TLC is neither (anymore). It is sad to see a good company go. (...) Until? (...) What kind of club leaves out members with long standing and a proven track record in favour of some 'wannabe upstarts' with no standing in the community? It amounts to identity theft. The new colours do not belong in the club. Peace and (...) (21 years ago, 6-May-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.lego, FTX)

(...) I know some people are still thinking this is bad news, but I disagree. Thanks for providing this list to us, Jake. Of all the news you have given, I think this may be the most healing. (...) Jake, Thanks for the update. Curiously absent from the list are any/all of the transparent colors. Hopefully some of those (t-white/clear, t-yellow, t-green, t-red) will be included in the additions to the list. Ray Sanders lugnet # 124 (21 years ago, 7-May-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.lego)

Jake, I made the following suggestion in a separate thread ((URL)), but just for completeness I'll post it in this too-long thread as well: Don't change any more colors, period.
