I just built a new nanofig-scale dreadnaught starship (1) last night, in about
three hours from concept to just-need-to-attach-guns. It incorporates quite a
few details of Takei's starships, notably the enormous engine shrouds... What
I need to figure out how to do, but may forever be stumped by, is to capture
the "Robotech-ness" he has in his starships, mecha, etc.

My best loving anime is the MACROSS saga in ROBOTECH and STAR BLAZERS
(known as YAMATO in Japan). Of course the most of Japanese "mecha-anime"
is my favourite!
My creations are VERY influensed from them.
I always thought the official space theme models don't fit Japanese sense.
So I decided to start it myself.

The "CRAZY-CAT", I named. :)
I simply wanted a color variations on #5571 Blackcat. But it was
impossible to make Redcat or Greencat so I denied and build it with full
ranges of existing colors.

So I try to make in different "main color" next to next and make them exist
longer.
The old models are remained only as photos.

Mark, being a mecha fan you probably know this, but Cartoon Network is adding
Gundam W to their Toonami lineup on March 6. Since it will be aimed for kids,
some of the content will be edited out; *however*, they will air two unedited
episodes on Saturday nights atmidnight! Woohoo! :)

No. Not yet.
But I have plans to make some. I want to make it transform from a fighter
to a robot, just like the Valkyrie.
The L.E.G.O. FORCE theme have a background story similar to Macross or
Gundam. Models I made already are the machines that appear around the
hero.
It may take years to complete the whole L.E.G.O. FORCE world but I will
continue.

'Aliens.' I especially like the use of the white octagonal corridor
sections and grey X-wing engines.

whole starforce in your room!!!
But we Japanese don't have enough space to display in the house, you know.
I always look at the American's minifig scale town creations in surprise
that using big rooms or basements.

It may be great if we could share the models in 3D data virtual world.
They are the mini-mini sized version of #0020 Defensive fighter ready to
take off at the catapult lane.

I agree. My room is only about 10X6 or so, and since I only have one bin of
parts, I just disassemble everything after some time, to build something new.
I can't stand having the same starcruiser around for a long time, because many
of the good parts are integrated into it, and I can't build much else. It only
makes sense to disassemble something after a while, to build something else.
After all, that's what LEGO parts are for: build, destroy, build anew, destroy
again, etc...

Actually it reminds me more of the USS Sulaco from Aliens. Really nice lego
model.
I'd suggest any lego space fans take a look at Syd Meads design works. He
started out in automobile design and for the last few decades has been
designing all sorts of neat stuff.. including:
-some tron video game vehicle designs and game world...
-the "look" of blade runner and several vehciles/props/layouts
-Johnny 5 from Short Circuit
-And lots of lots of starships in movies such as: 2010, Aliens [USS Sulaco
being one of my favorite all time SF designs].
Several of his books is published by Kodansha.. however they are expensive but

Ironically, Cameron vetoed many of Mead's original design concepts for
_Aliens._ The original sulaco was a bulbous craft with a spiral section
on the back.

There's also a video game for the ill-fated NEC TurboGraphix-16 called
Syd Mead's Terraforming. I haven't gotten my hands on it yet, but it
sounds good.

I suggest to get maybe half the distance closer and
look it up (in wider lens, if possible).

I am a big fan of Syd Mead. I have most of his
portofolio books and disks except the very first
"Sentinel".
His latest work is the Japanese anime "Turn-A
Gundam" which is now about to finish the 1 year
series aired here. He did some of the "mobile suits"
robots.
The mechanics in "Aliens" have a plenty of anime
sense. The Sulaco, APC, PowerLoader and even the
handheld wapons are so cool and neatly used in the
scenes.
I really think it could have been great if the movie
"Star Troopers" had a "powered suits" action just
like in the novel. They can fight better than the
Loader.

I just bought a square yard of black felt at a fabric store for about $4.00.
Very cheap. I keep one side clean from lint with the sticky side of masking
tape.

It may take days to discuss about this. :)
But the director Mr.Tomino says it was a must to break out "old" Gundams
after the 20th anniversary since his memorial first series. And there was
no other mecha-designers than Mead he think that can bring a new blood
with a sure mechanical and scientific knowledge.

To record my models as a CAD data takes time... Especially when the model
is as large as the spaceship model.
If I had a time to digitize the previous models, I rather like to use it to
create more new models.
I wish for a super x-ray scanner that can read out the model and convert
into 3d data. :)

Ken -- I just bought software called "Bricks" from Knowledge Adventure. (It
used to be called "Gryphon Bricks"). It's not as good as lDraw, but it runs on
a Mac. You can download the demo from:
ftp://ftp.adventure.com/pub/products/bricks/BricksDemo_sea.hqx
(I had trouble with this link, but the software is there.) I'm going to write a
letter to them to see if they will release the source code. This is old
software, and may be hard to find.

Making new designs is a good thing. I actually like most of the design of
the Turn-A. But the mustache thing on the head is just awful.
