delicious confusion.

Cleaning the track regularly is still a good thing, as long as it's
done right.  I remember the instructions for my brother's slotless racetrack
set specifically said that if you noticed a reduction in speed or
performance, you should swab all of the contact points with vinegar (of
course, I'm pretty sure that the track base wasn't formed in ABS, so it
might have been harmless for the plastic).  I'm not really into the whole
LEGO train thing, so I'm not really sure if there's a point where the LEGO
track has to be replaced, but if track is usually still servicable after a
few decades of regular heavy use, I'd say you should be as concerned about
long-term damage to the plastic ties as you are about short-term damage to
the metal rails.

I did have another thought.  If handling the track contributes to grimy
build-up, has anyone considered wearing latex gloves while handling track?
I know it sounds a bit weird, but if you can take a box of clean track to a
show, set it up at the show, and then have to clean it right afterwards, it
seems to me that not actually touching the rails could reduce or eliminate
the need for cleaning the track right after laying it out.

Of course, if you wanted to be truly authentic, you could rig up a car
with some dremel tips and send it around to grind all of the track smooth...  ;)
