Everyone is talking about the inside or side of the rails as if that
is the important area to clean. Take a piece of straight track and
place a train motor on top of it. Hold it up to a light source so as
to backlight where the electric wheel flange touches the rail when
you look down the track lengthwise. You will see that the electric
flange touches the rail only at the top inside edge of the rail. In no
case is contact made more than 1/5 of one millimeter below the
top of the track! Look and see for yourselves... it's a myth.
