Tobbe, Keep it Pure! That is part of the Challange! Finding ways to work
with the short commings is part of building. True the worm gears have a
significant amount of backlash, but using wormgears without another means to
soak up the slack needs exploration. I use levers and shocks on the
"Buissiness end" to soak up the Backlash. Allowing cheat elements - non-lego
or what ever you want to call it....Spacers, widgets, etc....is not pure.
Think of it as a challenge to create. Finding ways to make up for the
backlash. Surely interesting designs will come about in the pursuit of slack
free mechanisms. I have struggled with this for years and years. In the end
I have found ways within the system to work with the shortcomming. Please
Please keep it pure. People work hard to come up with their creations and I
would think it unfair to allow non-Lego elements to find their way into your
contest.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but, I would loose respect for your
contest if you were to allow bits of plastic other than Lego into your contest.
Let people find ways of dealing with the backlash thru ingenuity. Their are
solutions. See my Mantis, see my Super Mech bot, the Legs on the Red Robot
just to name a few - Visit the "Tendons" picture on the GG Mech folder.
Fact is, when you use different kinds of Worm set ups, the backlash present
is a condition of the kind of set up used. In the real world anti-backlash
gears are used for precise movement. Or direct stepper motor controll is used.
Precise milled gears with microns of tolerances.
The Anti-backlash gears can be found in the Berg Catalogs. They are quite
intersting. They are essentially (if you didn't know) a gear sliced in two
right down the center. Then a series of springs are mounted inside the gear
hub it'self, this provides a constant presence against the leading and
waining edgeds of the gears - maintaining a constant touch amoung the teeth.
Dang I hope I explained that right.
Anyway, more to the point. Some people enjoy the challange of finding ways
to overcome the Backlash issue.
Is there Backlash in the worm gears? Yes certainly. It seems TLC should have
made the WG's a tad bit longer. But that is not the only source of backlash
in the common technic gear train. There is also the space between the teeth
on the gears. If you allow bits of plastic on the WG shaft then all your
doing is ignoring the other half of the issue. Which is that the gears
themslves; 8,16,24,40....have a fair amount of backlash as well. It is both
situations that ultimatly come together under the collective of the backlash
phenomenon.
Throw in axle twist and there you have it.
Keep your contest pure. I'm sure you can provide a good incentive to keep
the models comming to the contest free from non-lego. Technic is great. Keep
to the system and ye shall be rewarded.
Also see my LB series. Shocks soak up the slack in the spine.
Man, am I a Purist or what!

| Hi all! As you might or might not know the MoTeC competition/challenge is all lugnet.technic readers competition and I feel you all should be able to improve on the competition. A question about the rules have come to mind. The worm gears needs some (...) (23 years ago, 6-May-02, to lugnet.technic)
