I disagree with this guy's assessment of the role of a personal fighter. His
arguments rely on a number of key assumptions that are not directly stated in
his discussion.
The key to the carrier's role in history, IMHO, has been two fold: versatility
and protection. Large ships engaging eachother (Battleship vs. battleship)
carries a certain key problem: they are almost always within range of eachother!
A personal fighter has the ability to engage the enemy fleet, while at the same
time keeping the home fleet outside the range of attacks. This ability would
only diminish if velocity and acceleration between large ships (battleships)
and fighters were equal. I think there is reason enough to guess that a
fightercraft would be faster than larger vessels (at least in the short range).
remember: An Object at rest tends to stay at rest, and this increases with
mass. therefore an object of lesser mass will always be more maneuverable than
an object of greater mass (battleship vs. fighter).
Also, and most importantly, because of their size, fighters have a unique
ability to get close to larger ships, find and expose their weaknesses.. their
soft-under-bellies, if you will. While ANH featured an unlikely single torpedo
destroying a moon-sized space station; the idea in ROTJ of fighters being able
to infiltrate defences focused on repelling battleships, and then destroy their
much larger opponent.
Think: fighters are small enough get inside battleship defences and inflict key
damage, especially in an *intelligent* (active human guidance) way that is not
shared by either guided missiles or cannon fire.
my analysis.

| Both these articles are very interesting as well as informative to all the spacers here. The first link leads to a listing and description of ALL proper names for space vessel designations by size and duty. I thought this was very informative. (URL) (...)
